Q: What does it feel like?

The treatment may feel like a mild sting for a fraction of a second. The intensity of the electrical current is adjustable and your electrologist will determine the level that is best for you. Also, topical creams are available by prescription from your doctor, which may lessen discomfort.

Q: How long do treatments take?

The length of treatments varies with the density of hair in the treated area, the number of previous treatments and the number of areas to be treated. Some clients are treated for 10-20 minutes and others longer.

Q: How many treatments are necessary?

Electrolysis involves a series of treatments over a period of time. Many hairs will be eliminated with only one treatment, but some will need two or more treatments to achieve permanency. It also depends on the stage of development the hair is in. This is important to understand. Hair goes through 3 stages of development. Typically in the anagen stage, the hair will respond more effectively to treatment. At any given time, only one third of the human hair is in the anagen stage. Treatments or scheduled every 1-2 weeks and gradually decrease to 4 or more as there is less hair.

Q: Will insurance pay for hair removal treatments?

Insurance generally does not cover electrolysis, because it is considered cosmetic.

Q: Are there any side effects?

Some people experience a slight redness to the treated area. Any mild swelling or redness usually disappears after a few hours.

Q: Should anyone avoid electrolysis?

Persons with a pacemaker, high blood pressure, diabetes or certain diseases should avoid electrolysis. Contact your doctor for more information.

Q: Are my treatments confidential?

Your electrologist realizes that excessive hair can be a source of concern and even embarrassment. Your privacy  and comfort during a treatment are of utmost concern.
